Today we're going through some new Shorts features and answering some audience questions.
Let's get started.
New Remixing Features on Youtube
First up, let's talk about two video remixing features we're rolling out on iOS called Cut and Green Screen.
Cut Feature
Cut lets you select a one-to-five-second video segment from eligible Shorts and VODs to use as the start of your short.
To use this feature, you may enter the flow in a few different ways.
But first, go to the Watch pages and click the Create button. When you click the Create icon, the cut option will appear.
You'll see the three-dot icon. Once you click that, you'll see the Cut option.
One thing to keep in mind is that if someone cuts a video from one of yours, whether it's a short or a long-form video known as a VOD, or video on demand, there will be an attribution link to your video within the Shorts player that, when clicked, will take the viewer back to the original source video or Short.
Green Screen Feature
The next feature we'd like to discuss is Green Screen, which is still in the early stages of being rolled out to iOS users.
You may utilize the ability to sample up to 60 seconds from a short or other qualified video on YouTube and use them as the background of your Short.
You may choose whether to utilize audio, video, or both from the source video you're sampling, and you can adjust how visible you are on the screen by pinching your image while in the camera.
If someone samples your work to produce a Green Screen film, there will be an attribution link that people may click to return to the original source video, similar to Cut.
You may check metrics from any remixes produced from your videos in YTA or YouTube analytics,However, we do not distinguish which feature or component was used at this moment.
Multiple drafts Feature
The next thing we'd want to discuss is multiple drafts Previously, the Shorts camera could only store one draft You may now store as many as you want.
You must save at least one draft in the camera to see the new functionality When you do, the draft button will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen the next time you enter the camera It is vital to understand that your drafts are linked to your device.
As a result, if you switch phones, you will lose access to your prior drafts Today this feature is only available on iOS, We'll keep you posted when it becomes available on Android.
Cut against green screen, for example, or audio versus video, or both,These features are currently only available on iOS,We'll keep you updated as soon as they're accessible for Android.
Do Shorts surface in the subscriptions feed?
Yes, Shorts will appear in the subscriptions feed for your channel subscribers.
How many clips can I import to the Shorts camera from my gallery?
There are no limits on the number of clips that you can add.
However, you are limited to the duration that you selected in the camera, 15 or 60 seconds.
The default camera experience is 15 seconds.
This means that you would only be able to add clips up to 15 seconds of total duration.
If you would like to upload more than 15 seconds worth of clips, then you need to change the recording duration in the camera to 60 seconds
before uploading clips.
What is YouTube doing to promote evergreen Shorts?
YouTube's recommendation is designed to follow the audience and respond to shifts in viewer interests over time.
It is common for viewers to show interest in an old or evergreen video,
as many viewers don't watch videos in chronological order or decide what to watch based on when the video was published.
If you go to your YouTube Shorts feed today, you may notice many videos recommended to you that were published weeks or even months ago.
A few things to keep in mind, if viewers are showing more interest in an older video, it may be that the topic is increasing in popularity, trends.google.com is a helpful tool to see how the world's interest in different topics is changing.
New viewers are discovering your channel and wanting to watch your older videos, more viewers are choosing to watch your video when it's offered to them in the feed, or your video is picked up in the press or shared on social media.
To retain these viewers, think about what you could make next that would interest this audience.
Any update on Super Thanks for Shorts?
You mentioned it, and I know a lot of Shorts-based partners would love to have access to this.
Stay tuned for updates, We're hoping to have them in beta by the end of this year.
If someone uses a clip of your video as a Short, do you get revenue for it?
Today users can sample audio and video from eligible Shorts and
videos across YouTube.
Anytime a short is created from your video, we attribute it back to the original source and this provides a great way for new audiences to discover and engage with your content.
Any views generated on your source video are eligible for monetization via the Shorts fund if the source video is short.
If the source video is a regular YouTube video or VOD, it is eligible for monetization if you're in the YouTube Partner program.
We're currently evaluating the long-term monetization model for Shorts and how remix fits into this.
Please make Shorts videos count towards our public watch hours.
The Shorts fund is the first step in Shorts monetization.
We're currently working with a longer monetization model for Shorts, and we'll keep you posted if short starts count towards public hours.
Should I add end screens to Shorts?
We don't recommend end screens for Shorts. End screens are not supported for views coming from the Shorts player.
That's all we have today. Make sure to leave your comments and questions below. We pass comments onto the team, and we'll try to answer questions in a future episode.
Keep it real.
